10K Day: Live, While It’s Happening! – Nov 24 & 27

“I Brake For Squirrels” (and 10K Day nuts)

“I Brake for Squirrels” (and 10K Day nuts)

WELCOME TO ALL those plucky writers who are participating this week!

This is the place to post your check-ins for Wednesday, November 24 and/or Saturday, November 27.

To learn more about this event, check the special 10K Day section (see blog menu above). If you develop a case of writer’s block—or need some extra ideas on what to write—you’ll find plenty of inspiring resources in the Write NOW! section.

DON’T FORGET TO TAKE REGULAR BREAKS!

You’ll regret it later (when you’re feeling fried) if you don’t take regular breaks. Even if you’re on fire with your writing, take your scheduled breaks.

Every two hours is recommended. Breaks are also for posting check-ins.

WHAT SHOULD YOU POST FOR YOUR CHECK-INS?

Comment moderation will be turned off for the day so your posts should appear right away. If you don’t see yours, try refreshing your screen.

Keep check-ins fairly brief:

1. You can mention your word count if you want to. If you’d rather not, please provide a general comment about your progress thus far.

2. You can also describe what you’re working on.

3. Feel free to mention how you’re feeling and how the day is going for you.

4. It’s always fun to hear what people are drinking, snacking on or listening to.

5. Check-ins only. Please DO NOT post your writing!

DON’T FORGET TO log out of forums, Facebook, Twitter, email, etc.

Go gettum, Tigers! – Milli

Hokay! a tad late, but I’m away – I forgot the Wednesday I thought it began on Saturday….

I’ve done 4k thus far. The story is a YA centered around a high school function. Locale Washington State – the idea being that the story is for the US market. Amendment – 4600.

I have just devoured a poached egg sandwich – cooked by own hands and the microwave. It is a sunny Aussie aftrernoon and my lawns still need mowing.
Story so far 5k. I’ll have an early Thanksgiving piece of pecan pie – bought for a song. Milo-The-Cat gets the canned Turkey.

Argh – I’m late!! It’s 11.30am here and I’ve only just got to the PC following a terrible night’s sleep (or no sleep, to be more accurate) last night (thank you hubby for snoring constantly). :o( Onwards and upwards though..!

Oh, forgot to mention – I’m fueled up with a bacon sandwich and tea. Hubby can make it up to me for keeping me awake by supplying me with regular tea throughout the day… 😉

Alza ~ Thanks for being our little Aussie flag bearer again and CONGRATS on the 7K!

Toyah ~ That’s what I do too; I make hubby help. I’ve got him lined up to make my favorite Indian dish for dinner tonight.

Off to get coffee and wake up this groggy head.

SO glad that I spent my lunch break yesterday sketching out a rough plan of where I want the story to go, it’s been a godsend today!

      Fantastic, Toyah!

You inspire me. I’m slowly waking up and about to get into some rough writing (still in my jammies) just to warm up.

      • Toyah
        November 24, 2010 | 8:14 AM

That’s very kind – I never thought I’d inspire anyone! The sleep I managed to grab between 7am and 10.30am has obviously refreshed my brain enough to get it going. I spent most of the night lying awake thinking how I was going to be too shattered today to string two words together, let alone 10,000. Darned snoring!! 🙁

I hear ya. For once I slept fairly well last night but I’ve spent many a night of insomnia before a 10K Day wondering how I was going to write without two rested brain cells to rub together.

          You’re doing fabulously!

I was finally starting to feel warmed up when hunger pains struck. Arggh!! So I’m interrupting my hard-earned flow to go have some eggs on toast. Might as well have my shower while I’m at it.

P.S. Where is everybody? I thought at least Jenny (EST) would be here by now? 🙂

6:15am here on the West coast. I woke up at 4am and thought “This is the day!” then fell happily back to sleep.
I’m going to eat bacon, eggs and toast then go to our local espresso cafe with my husband to wake up my writing juices! I’m so excited – this is my first 10K experience! Yipeeee – see ya later!

Hooray – just passed the 2000 mark (2013)!

Forgot to mention before that this is my NaNoWriMo story, which is a tale of a world similar to, but not, our own. A young boy holds himself responsible for the mysterious disappearance of the boy who was bullying him, so he and the bully’s younger sister leave their peaceful village to venture out into the unknown world to find and rescue him. It’s fantasy, so there are a few magical and mystical things thrown in (not all of which I’ve thought up yet, but I’m sure they’ll be great!).

    Good luck all!

PS I’m ‘toycool’ on the NaNo site if anyone wishes to be buddies. 😉

    I’m here! I’m here!

Patti’s right. I’ve been on fire. The past two days have been personal 10K Days for me, and I’ve reached my goal each time. My big goal is to reach 100K by the 30th (double the Nanowrimo standard), and I’ve only got 16K left to go.

    Piece. Of. Cake.

    😀

Now, I’m going to switch to the laptop and get started…

        Hahaha! You’re not old!

I’ve toyed with the idea of attempting to write a novel in 10 days (it would be at least 100K, of course), but I don’t know if my wrists could handle it! 😛

Thanks! 😀 My story’s taken a lot of twists and turns, with some big changes that will have to be made during the re-write, but the fact that I’m still writing is a very good sign. Until now, I’ve always had a hard time getting very far past 10K. Needless to say, I’ve very pleased with this story. 🙂

I have three Nanowrimo mugs: a red one that says “Can’t Talk. Noveling,” the brown travel mug with a lid, and the new cafe mug (https://store.lettersandlight.org/merchandise/nanowrimo-diner-mug). I want another one, and I want one of their hoodies, but I may wait until April, when I participate in Script Frenzy.

The cafe mug is the one I’m using, and it’s my favorite. It’s thick and chunky, just the way I like it. 🙂

    Hey everyone!

Better late than never, hey? I had to pick up hubby from work, a 2hr drive, but now I’m back and he’s in charge so I’ll have fewer interruptions. I’m eager to get started. I’m working on my Nano book, which is the third in my Extreme Haunting series. Detour 2 Death takes place in a hospital where the heroine’s best friend and blossoming love interest is in a coma. He’s trapped in “Feverland” as she calls it, and she has to go into his head to save him, leaving her body unattended for…well, I don’t wanna say 🙂

So now I’m off to write. It’s 10:22 here, be back around 12:30ish 🙂

    Warmly,

Congrats to everyone on your successes! You go Lois–your word count is awesome 😉 I’ve thought about writing a book a 10 days. I heard some famous author (forget who) did a whole book in like one weekend, but had to be helped into bed afterward. I don’t think I’d ever want to try that!

    Warmly,
    Jenny:)

Well it’s nearly 7pm and I can’t ignore my stomach any longer…off to make a stir fry. I might return later but once hubby puts the TV on in here (I kicked him out during the day) it’ll be very difficult to get the creative juices flowing again, so that might be it from me. Oh, I got to 3576 by the way! Not even halfway to 10k, but better than I’ve ever managed in one day previously so that’s progress. And it pumps my NaNo total up to about 8000 (‘gee, wow’ I hear you saying…).

In case I don’t come back later, thanks for all the encouragement and good luck for all you who are in time zones behind mine! I may just see you all on Saturday… 😉

Toyah, we would love to see you return on Saturday. I’m really proud of you! 3576 is a number to be proud of. And so is your NaNo count. Watching the word count for NaNo on Twitter sometimes makes my eyes glaze over. I still think the creativity and comradeship is the best part of these kinds of events.

      Enjoy your stir-fry!

I did 1,879 in my first two sessions.

A modest word count, but in terms of projects it feels good. I finished a short project—the intro for a new writing course I’m working on, for 732 words—and then the first act of my screenplay treatment for 1,147.

Seeing my story (movie) come to life from a bare concept is a thrill!

      Milli Vanilli!
I’m so glad you are seeing your movie story come to life. That’s exciting that you got 1,147 on the first act of your screenplay, plus have a new project in the works for 732 words.
      Keep it up! Go Milli!

      Mills.
On a screen play. What consitutes the number of words? Is it the dialog and directions only; or everything you put to paper?

        November 24, 2010 | 4:35 PM

Alza ~ Fortunately, I don’t have to work that out this time around. I’m working on a screenplay treatment, so it’s part story, part description of the story, with act breaks as the only scene headers.

But I would imagine for a screenplay itself, one could count everything. Otherwise, you’d be there all day trying to extract the right amount of numbers for sluglines, etc.

I had to take a break when I got to 3763 at 11:30. I was getting stiff. I danced and jumped on my trampoline to great motivating music and then had a couple slices of toast with bacon, lettuce and tomato. Now I’m back to work!

I’m Back again! 🙂 I got 3129 words this time around, which brings me to a grand total of 7109 so far. I’m gonna try to shake off the sleepy-eyes that got me yawning every other second here. Then I’ll be back for session #3. Maybe today I’ll be able to hit my 50K for Nano, I’m at 43181 so far.

It looks like everyone is doing an awesome job as well. These 10K days are so inspiring and I love the sense of us all working together at the same time. I have this vision of busy fingers on keyboards all around the world!! It’s great to have company, isn’t it? 🙂

I’m on 3,035 now. I’m half-way through Act II, Scene II.

My real goal for the 10Ks this week is to finish one treatment today and one on Saturday. So I’m happy with my progress, even if it is a bit tortoisy. I came to a fork in the road for my story so I’m going to walk around the block a few times till I work out which fork to take.

I’m loving everyone’s check-ins. This is a group of super-writers and cool people!!

Busy keyboards around the world. I like that! 😀

My second writing session got me 4,049 more words, for a total (so far) of 7,344. My story’s almost done, but it will take more than 2,656 words to complete it. 😉

Hope everyone’s having a great day, so far! 🙂

Nineteen actually. All in an American accent too.

Helene: I sit in awe 2K plus words in 30 min – wow! Bewdyhels
To all of you at whatever stage – well done.

Mills: Bitatheardyakka, mate, but nose wet, gottit done. Now I can sit back and watch the ashes – (trans: Ashes – a traditional cricket match bewteen Australia and England. Goes back to 1880 when we beat the Poms (English) and some wag cremated the wickets of that last match – and announced the ‘death’ of English cricket ) Cricket can be bloody boring, but it beats re-runs of soaps.

After that, I plan to revise, edit and proofread (need to have it ready as soon as I can) so I’ll be here till late. I’ll be looking for your check-ins. 🙂

Yes, I’m going to have to stop just short of 5k to bake desserts for tomorrow. I won’t reach 10k either, but I had so much fun. I wrote two posts (one that’s been sitting inside me for a long time and came out fully formed), and probably 3/4 of a story that I love. I’ll be back later tonight, and I’ll definitely try again on Saturday at least for some portion of the day.
