10K Day: Live, While It’s Happening! – March 23 & 26

© Shirley Hu Dreamstime.com

WELCOME TO ALL those plucky writers who are participating this week!

This is the place to post your check-ins for Wednesday, March 23 and/or Saturday, March 26.

To learn more about this event, check the 10K Day section (see blog menu above).

DON’T FORGET TO TAKE REGULAR BREAKS!

You’ll regret it later (when you’re feeling fried) if you don’t take regular breaks. Even if you’re on fire with your writing, take your scheduled breaks.

Every two hours is recommended. Breaks are also for posting check-ins.

WHAT SHOULD YOU POST FOR YOUR CHECK-INS?

If you don’t see your comment right away after posting, try refreshing your screen.

Keep check-ins fairly brief:

1. You can mention your word count if you want to. If you’d rather not, please provide a general comment about your progress thus far.

2. You can also describe what you’re working on.

3. Feel free to mention how you’re feeling and how the day is going for you.

4. It’s always fun to hear what people are drinking, snacking on or listening to.

DON’T FORGET TO log out of forums, Facebook, Twitter, email, etc.

Go gettum, Tigers! – Milli

Morning morning! It’s 10am here, I’m dressed, fed and have taken care of all my Facebook chores (animals fed, cafe cleaned etc…hey, don’t laugh at me!) so here I go. I’m going to work on my ‘chick lit’ project and try to get into the ‘NaNo frame of mind’ where the words just flow…well, that’s the plan anyway. 🙂

I know, right? I got that lucky number approx. 15 years ago, back when I lived in Australia. I had to look twice when I saw you recording it as your 10K Day word count. 😀

    Good morning happy writers!

Milli, I love the image for 10K Day! It makes me want to sit in that English cottage with a cup of tea.

I’m working on an article today, so word count isn’t on my main agenda, but I’ll check in and hopefully inspire others.

Toyah is off to a great start! WooHoo!

    Let’s rock and roll!

Pattikins, I know what you mean about that image. It makes me want to sit in a coffeehouse with lots of atmosphere and write in a notebook.

      Good luck with your article!

So today, we are in a coffeehouse, somewhere in the UK, with cups of tea and notebooks, surrounded by the lovely Brit culture and totally enjoying our day.

Hey, I might even wear a sundress! Now that’s imagination. 🙂

Ahhhhh. Do we have to come back to reality? LOL.

One day we WILL do this. Kevin and Brian can visit the nearest pub for a beer while we have our tea. 😉

          March 23, 2011 | 10:49 AM

And hey guess what? It’s even sunny today, so you CAN wear your sundress! It feels like Spring has finally sprung… 😉

    Good afternoon brilliant writers,

Gosh – what a late start! I had to hit a copywriting deadline by 1pm. However, I’m here, I have 3 hours and I’m ready to open my manuscript.

I’m pretty tired (6.5 months pregnant) and will be stopping at 4pm for ice cream on the beach. It’s the hottest day of the year so far in Brighton, UK.

Good luck and sending happy writing vibes to you all

Wow, I didn’t know that about the 6.5 months. Congratulations! And goodonya for showing up to write with us even though it’s so wickedly hot there. Ice cream on the beach definitely sounds like the right reward. 😀

    Good morning everyone!

I’m just getting going after spending a long day yesterday prom shopping for my son and his girlfriend. And the phone is already ringing, ugh!

Anyway, I’m needing to catch up on my monthly word count and will be checking in every couple of hours to see how everyone’s doing and to give updates.

The project(s) I’m working on? I’ll be bouncing back and forth between two western women novels I’m developing. Bouncing because at the moment, I have a bunch of ideas, some fitting with the mountain story and some with the ranch story. Yeah, I really need to get better organized. 🙂 That’s a whole other project unto itself.

Hope y’all have an awesomely productive day and I’ll be back in a couple of hours. 🙂

Good morning! I’m late, I’m late, for a very important date…with my keyboard, but I’m finally here! 😀

I’ll be writing my Will Scarlet background today. It will likely go into the novel…or it might be a standalone “prequel.” Either way, I’m going to write it today.

I can’t wait! It’s been way too long since I’ve been able to participate. 🙁

Breakfast was a big bowl of grits with fresh blueberries and a large ScriptFrenzy bistro mug full of organic green tea. I’m ready to rock and roll! 😀

Oh, and I’m currently listening to Clannad’s I Will Find You (theme from The Last of the Mohicans), among others.

That’s too funny. Just yesterday, I wrote on someone’s blog, “I’m late, I’m late, for a very important [insert what I was there for].” And now you’re saying it on my blog, today. And I read that right after replying to Toyah that the number she wrote for her first word count of the day is my lucky number from 15 years ago when I lived in Australia. Go figure. It must be a day of serendipities.

Your prep for your writing day sound awesome, as does your plan to write the background for a character called Will Scarlet. Have fun, Lois. 🙂

I’m doing free-writing today, too. And just finished sipping my second cup of coffee. But the Spring weather we were having has disappeared into rain, with snow predicted later this week. Darn.

Wow, I just read through all those comments and feel totally inspired. It’s so great to be able to connect with other writers. Thanks Milli!

Toyah, thanks for the congrats – is it sunny in North Wales as well?

I’ve managed 800 words of the rewritten first chapter of my manuscript. I took a three week break from it and today is the third day back submerging myself into the characters and how they are at the beginning of the novel. I’m pleased with the progress and I’ve left my protagonist down on Brighton beach – funnily enough where I’m heading in a few minutes.

Wishing you all an abundance of writing flow

It is! And almost okay to go out without a coat (and it has to be proper WARM for me to give up my coat!!). It’s very distracting though, seeing it out there through the window, looking all blue-sky and such… 🙁

    March 23, 2011 | 12:10 PM

Just checking in…I have a sick kid today so instead of writing just yet, I’m doing a bit of mapping out of the very beginnings of new characters so I can start seeing what they’re about (where they are coming from/going to). Then soon, maybe today, I’ll start implementing Lois’ strategy of character journaling. Just depends on how the day goes.

Didn’t have breakfast but did a Cream of Wheat brunch with the kiddo. Let the dogs outside and discovered the farmers are spreading chicken manure on the fields nearby. Yuck and phew!

Okay, now that that’s out of my system, I’m cranking my Pandora radio back up and getting back to work on the novel planning.

    Write On! 🙂

Chicken litter. YUCK! That’s the WORST thing about living in the country. I’ll take the skunks and cow manure anyday! 😛

Good luck with the mapping and character journaling. 🙂

I’m on my first break, and my current word count is 2,289. Will has just been sent away to train to become a knight, and he’s had to leave his lover behind. 🙁 He won’t be back for seven months. A lot can happen in seven months. Will she wait for him? Will his rival win her hand in marriage? Will he even survive training?

I’m currently drinking a large mug of Celestial Seasonings Honey Lemon Ginseng Green Tea. Yummy! 😛

Current music is “Evade,” by Forever (only the greatest band ever to come out of eastern Canada!).

    “I’m late, I’m late for
    A very important date.
No time to say hello, good-bye,
    I’m late, I’m late, I’m late
I’m late and when I wave,
I lose the time I save.
    My fuzzy ears and whiskers
Took me too much time to shave.
I run and then I hop, hop, hop,
I wish that I could fly.
There’s danger if I dare to
Stop and here’s a reason why:
    I’m over-due, I’m in a rabbit stew.
    Can’t even say good-bye,
    hello, I’m late, I’m late, I’m late.”

🙂 Good morning, afternoon or evening everyone!

My memories came from the song Lois so I looked it up and found those song lyrics from the first appearance of Alice In Wonderland by Disney.
        Credit goes to:
I’M LATE – From the Walt Disney film “Alice In Wonderland” (1951) (Sammy Fain / Bob Hilliard)

I don’t have the book to refer to, but I think White Rabbit only said, “Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be too late!”

          March 23, 2011 | 2:45 PM

LOL! Well, Disney has used some good song writers. One of my all-time favorites is from Bambi…the one with the raindrops falling. I love that one! 🙂

    March 23, 2011 | 2:26 PM

I’m taking another break for a late lunch (cubed chicken breast, salad greens, shredded cabbage, shredded cheese, black walnuts and lite honey mustard dressing on low-carb flatbread; Greek style yogurt seasoned with Saigon cinnamon and nutmeg [no sweetener]; a cup of V-8 juice) and thought I’d post my word count, thus far. I just wrote 1,396 more words, bringing my subtotal to 3,685. At times, it’s slow going, but I’m still working on it.

Will has returned home from serving during the Siege at Damietta (1218-19) to find that something is seriously bothering his lady love. She won’t tell him what’s happened, but she mentions the name of his longtime rival. What could have happened to her during Will’s absence? Has his rival done something to cause her grief? If so, what will he do about it? 😉

    Right. Back to work…

Okay peeps, I have to sign off here as it is tea time (gammon, chips and garlic bread…mmmm) and we need the table to eat off!

Regretfully I only managed 1790 words in the end, as I was somewhat fatally distracted at lunchtime by my non-fiction project, which is still in the research stage so has a word count of zero *doh*. Today’s work takes my chick lit project up to just under 5000 words in total. Ooh, plus I just did a blog post of 425 words, which pops me over the 2000 for today (and makes me feel a bit better!).

Good luck to you who are still going! 🙂

  16. Lois
    March 23, 2011 | 4:42 PM

I’m on my third break now, and this one will be a bit longer, as I plan to take a shower before continuing.

During this last session, I wrote 3,361 words, bringing my subtotal to 7,046! 😀

Will has just killed his father’s steward, and now he’s on the run. As he was making his getaway, his youngest brother, Caelin, tried to trick Gisbourne into going elsewhere. Unfortunately, Gisbourne was wise to him, and he killed the fifteen-year-old, then went after Will.

Will wants to go back, but can’t. What will he do? Where will he go? What will happen to him?

    Break Number Four:

Word Count: 1,827 words for a subtotal of 8,873! 😀
    Drinking: Bigelow Mint Medley tea
Music: Nickel Creek’s When In Rome (one of my favorite American Indians, Rick Mora, appears in the video!)

Will has met Robin Hood, Little John, Sir Geoffrey (a character of my own creation), Sir Richard, and Maid Marian. He is currently being fed, but he will soon be put to a test…of sorts. 😉

Incidentally, I am using their “common” names. I have given them more authentic names for the period, using the old ballads and stories, as well as medieval names lists, but I wanted to keep it simple here.

Next up: Will does battle with Robin Hood. Will he win? Will he lose? What could possibly happen with each outcome?

    Final Update:

Word Count: 1,799 words for a daily total of 10,672! 😀
Drinking: nothing…I’m about to float away! 😛
    Music: Nebulous, by Manic Drive

Will won the challenge posed to him by Robyn, and he’s joined Robyn’s band of merry men. Then he began dreaming about his poor, murdered younger brother. Not to worry. He found some moral support in his friend, Sir Geoffrey. 🙂

Will he ever get vengeance for his brother? Will he ever see his lover, Ælfwynne, again? What other adventures lay ahead for our handsome young hero?

And now I’m off to watch some Highlander: The Series with my hubby. 🙂

Good luck to everyone still writing. You can do it! Keep believing, and you will be a success! 😀

I’m done for the day too. Didn’t get much more accomplished what with taking care of everyone else and planting in the garden. But that was therapeutic in itself. 🙂

Congratulations to Lois, had a feeling you’d reach 10K today. 🙂 Helene, Patti, Toyah and Catherine, great job! Dana, if you’re still around, hang in there and I’m sure you’ll get done what needs doing. Kate, sometimes it’s good to take a break to rest our minds and gather new ideas. Keep up the good work. 🙂

Here’s my update. My word count is nonexistent. However, I reviewed my potential scenes for Script Frenzy. I also worked on my outline. I’m almost through the climax and ready to submit my story summary to my editor.

I’m excited and nervous. But too tired to decide which is dominant.

I’m off to bed feeling good. 🙂

I didn’t know what I was doing when I wrote my first script and that turned out to be an advantage. I say, forget the advice books and just write the story that’s in your heart. You can always pare it down and fine-tune it later. But revel in your first draftedness! I wrote mine with so many wrylies I should have been embarrassed, but I didn’t know any better until later and that let me write without worrying about the “shoulds.” Also, if you don’t know enough to know what you should be fixing, it lessens the risk of backtracking to edit when you should just be going “Splat!” on the page.

I believe in you. You’re gonna do grrrreat!

I’m going to follow your advice. It makes it seem a lot easier. I want to write the script for Black Diamond. I’m reading the book this weekend. And I believe it will help me with writing the spinoff novel as well. I’m trying to get a 2-for-1 here. LOL!

            Thanks My Milli!!! 🙂

Kudos to you for diving in at the last minute. Sometimes that’s better than being prepared. 🙂 You were right in what you said in your RSVP note – some progress is better than none, and I’m pleased you’re embracing the spirit that underlies the 10K Day.

And, wow, it looks like you just started your blog this week, too! I love the name you chose for it, and your stated objective. I’ve weathered through many decades of PTSD and though it probably doesn’t fall in the category of mental illness, I feel kindred with your goals for your blog.

I’m shooting for 1-2K on the day as we have a birthday/anniversary party to go to later and company.
But no gardening (I think). 🙂

Two things are on my writing list today: Updating my blog (I’m way behind) and working on one of my western novels. Which depends on the mood I’m in when I get to it.

Hope everyone has a productive day wherever you are and whatever you’re working on! 🙂

Thanks for the welcomes Milli & Catherine –

I was using Write or Die to keep myself writing without stopping — got all excited about my word count and thought I was going to speed thru to 10k – hahaha!

LOve the ways I can fool myself, now I’m thinking about using crazy glue to stick my hiney to the chair because I am SO wanting to do the 10,003 things I’ve thought of in the last few minutes that HAVE to get done (right!).

I took a break to get breakfast and stretch – and i’ve taken a couple quick check-my-email breaks — and now I’m determined to stay in this chair for an hour of writing. It’s so odd that i love spending time writing, but then find so many reasons (welcome distractions?) not to do it!

To the writing — thanks for the inspiration here! Glad to be part of this group!!

    Hi all,
I didn’t get to RSVP so I’m sneaking in today and hope to write 5k words today. I’d aim for more but I’m in the town where my book begins. Today, I’m going to drive and walk around the town to take pictures and get inspired. I’m sure a few locals will think I look like some crazy tourist but it’s so neat to step on the very ground that my protagonist does in my story.

I’ll write tonight after a day of inspiration.

Greetings to Milli and All! Thanks Milli for the feedback on my blog. Good luck on your projects.
I was having trouble imagining what clothing would be like in the year 2054 so that put me behind a little. I know, I shouldn’t have worried so much about those details. So after watching bits and pieces of several Scifi based movies (and wasting my time because it was futile) and wasting precious time, I wrote about 200 words to begin my scene and decided to call in for a nap around 8:30 am. I am up now and ready to go!

    Hi Crystal and Marvin!

Marvin, I did the “wasting precious time” thing, too – hunting for some stuff I didn’t need right now, but thought would be good to have handy??? Writing about 2054 sounds very interesting!

Crystal – I love the idea of walking around a town that you’re writing about. I’ve done the opposite a bunch of times – walked around a town and THOUGHT about writing something…

Catherine – I need a hair cut bad (think English Sheepdog), hope you got a cut you love and it fuels your freedom to write!!

Milli, hope the journalling is fun – hear you with the insomnia. I was up off and on til 5 this morning – what’s with THAT? argh! I can usually sleep no matter what/where. Hey, this isn’t a 10k side effect, is it?

ok, back to it — i got bored with the Square-Peg Manifesto and actually finished the newsletter that I’ll be sending out next week (it’s only been a year and a half since the last one)

    Onward!

    Congrats to everyone today! 🙂

I had such a good day lined out. Then teenagers with thoughts of their first prom took over. I swear I’m really the mother of only one but sometimes all four need my help. *sigh* I guess it just wasn’t meant to be today. That’s okay though. I’ve got several practice photos for prom to work on and it’s another creative direction I’m possibly leaning toward, so it’s all good. Writing and photography. No problem. 😀

I had to work on a few different projects because I kept stallin on the WIP. I made 1843 words today. That’s still more than I’ve done the last 2 weeks, I believe. Can’t wait till next month. I’ll be more ready then. Great job, everyone. Thanks for being so welcoming.

That’s great, Marvin! I understand the stallin’ (it can run deep and not easily solved by one 10K Day) but progress on anything is good. 🙂

I’m thrilled to hear you want to join us again next month. Are you on Twitter? I Tweet reminders to our regulars a few days before the event (plus notifications earlier in the month when the RSVP page goes up).
