WELCOME TO ALL those plucky writers who are participating this week!
This is the place to post your check-ins for Wed., April 20 and/or Saturday, April 23.
To learn more about this event, check the 10K Day section (see blog menu above).
DON’T FORGET TO TAKE REGULAR BREAKS!
You’ll regret it later (when you’re feeling fried) if you don’t take regular breaks. Even if you’re on fire with your writing, take your scheduled breaks.
Every two hours is recommended. Breaks are also for posting check-ins.
WHAT SHOULD YOU POST FOR YOUR CHECK-INS?
TIP: If you don’t see your comment right away after posting, try refreshing your screen.
1. You can mention your word count if you want to. If you’d rather not, please provide a general comment about your progress thus far.
2. You can also describe what you’re working on.
3. Feel free to mention how you’re feeling and how the day is going for you.
4. It’s always fun to hear what people are drinking, snacking on or listening to.
DON’T FORGET TO log out of forums, Facebook, Twitter, email, etc.
Go gettum, Tigers! – Milli
Hi everyone.
I’ve got 4 hours and a chapter to rewrite.
Good luck
See you later x
Good Morning! I just had a quick breakfast of chorizo scrambled eggs and polenta. Sitting down to start my first 2 hour stint of my first 10K Day. Wish me luck!

‘morning folks! I had coffee for breakfast (well, lots of water and a little cuppa joe actually – but I’ll eat a proper breakfast later) & I plan to free-write about some things that I’d like to get clearer on (and hey, if a blog post organically appears I will NOT complain).
Happy Writing, All!

Hi Happy Writers!
Just checking in to wish everyone well today. I have work to do, but so far I can’t find my groove.
May the words fly from your fingertips like the wind in southwest MO.
Blessings,
Patti

Good morning! I am waiting on my coffee but ready to get some work done today. I’ll check in with you all soon.
1,017 in just short of 2 hours. Time for a stretch. Moving from coffee to water.
Ack, terrible start; it’s 3pm here and this is me just sitting down to write.
Was on the verge of postponing today’s attempt entirely but what a terrible impression that would make on my first day! A little accountability goes a long way. 🙂
Time to redeem myself!

I’m here, barely. Tried to sleep off a PMS headache but no luck. So I’ll go easy till I feel better.
Off to drink some coffee and do some journaling on the couch.

I seem to have a funk hovering over me today too. I’ve had two writing sessions and feel a bit better, but still can’t shake it.
Think I’ll take it easy today too, or continue to take it easy, as I’ve already been doing that. LOL
Big Bug Hugs for you!
I’m here! 😀
I’ve already had breakfast, so now I’m just drinking water while I work. I may fix some decaf later.
I’ll be working on two stories, one in blog form, the other in regular story form. One character is immortal (not a vampire), and the other is a mortal experiencing what it’s like to have his country break out in a civil war.
Obviously, I don’t have a word count yet, but I’ll check in around noon with my progress.
Happy writing, all!
Lois
What an inspiring endeavour 🙂 I always want to do it, but then at the last minute I shy away 🙂 Next time!

Checking in — I’m wowed by the comments, very inspiring to read other writers going thru the same stuff.
I just got back from a quick trek (had to pick a few things up from the store) and realized – mid trek – that I’d been feeling kind of down. I realized it AS some of the down-ness was dissipating.
Which led to paying attention to what caused the down-ness to move away a bit – which led to what I’ll be working on in the next bit of 10k -> a blog post. Yea 10K!
Go! Writers, Go!!
I am super pleased with my progress today as it’s been the best writing day at my new desk so far.
I’m currently restructuring the first three chapters for submission and today I pretty much finished chapter 2! I felt totally inspired along the way by using EFT and having the drive of the 10K day behind me.
I reached almost 3,000 words and then I gave myself the afternoon off to spend with some girlfriends in the sunshine.
Milli, I hope you are feeling better and as always thanks for hosting these brilliant days.
OOH I love being in the writerly flow
Kate
Stopped at noon with 2,831 words. Half hour break to run to grocery (nice to get a quick walk in) to buy fresh bakery bread and lemon to marinate the chicken.
Now I’m set up with my fresh bread, prosciutto, and bufala mozzarella. The same thing I ate in Florence as I completed my take home comprehensive exam. Except in Florence I was also drinking red wine. I think I’m too old to do that now and still keep up the work.
Back to it!
My first check-in. *g*
I just wrote three character journal entries for my Sonny Deltoro character. Things have really gone downhill for him. He’s the one whose country (the U.S., as happens) has gone to war with itself.
3,129 words and counting! 😀
Next up, I’ll be working on my Immortal Watchdog, Damian of Crete. He won’t fare much better than Sonny, I’m afraid. 😉
But first, I must have lunch! Some left over pasta and red sauce. 🙂
Oh, and I’m currently standing at my kitchen counter. We’ve been having a bit of a flea problem, and the kitchen is the only place I feel “safe” from being eaten alive! O_O I’ve been alternating between sitting on my bar stool and standing. It’s…different, and I miss my comfy office chair. 🙁
Otherwise, I feel great! 😀 I’m pretty positive that I can make 10K by 5:30. I love a good challenge. 🙂
Lois,
I write and edit standing up sometimes. If I had a larger house with a roomy office, I’d probably get a standing desk (in addition to a regular one).
I hope to do a little standing-in-the-kitchen writing myself this evening as my dinner cooks. One complication: temp has gone up to the 80s today and kitchen may be too hot! We’ll see.
Sara
Sara,
It’s 72° here right now, but it feels much warmer inside…in spite of the fan being on. I’m writing about Crete, though, and so it adds to the atmosphere as I’m writing the story. 😉
Starting a bit later than everyone else. I am here now and firing up the fingers to type with. I’m working on a play. I started writing my story and after a bit, it began to take on the form of a play or screenplay rather than a traditional format. So I went with it. I hope to finish the first draft today.
4,213 words. Getting a little tired.
Hi everyone,
Just got back from my weekly “mindful writer’s” group. I wrote 1000 words there and had ideas for several scenes. I’m going to try to push through some of those today. Sara, here is a post I just saw and has a pic of a standing desk
http://bit.ly/gYCdg8
Good luck to All
Love the standing desk! 😀 I ought to get me one of those. 😉
Twitter: SquarePegKaren
Checking in? Checking out? I’m not doing a word count today, but feeling pretty good about moving forward with a couple writing projects (thanks to 10K), and now am going to take a nap – yep, a nap! Fuel for later writing. I’ll check back in the evening to see if anyone is continuing the 10K into the later hours – and if so, I’ll check in again.
Happy writing, all!
I’ll be running on into the midnight hour!
Should have done more research earlier this week, but new scene material has come up.
Second break! 😀
I’m now at 5,310 words. I’ve been working on my Immortal Watchdogs story, and so far, I’ve written about my character’s birth and his sister’s death. Next up, a nasty trick his hateful brother plays on him. 🙁
Oh, and his powers have begun to manifest themselves. 😉
I’ve only just begun drinking my coffee. Good thing it’s decaf! I may have a few almonds for a snack in a little bit.
As for music, I heard some distant thunder a little while ago. Does that count? I wonder if I can work that into my story…
It doesn’t look like I’ll reach 10K by 5:30, but as long as I finish writing this background stuff for my IW character, I’ll be happy as a pig in slop! 🙂
Twitter: pattistafford
Lois,
You’re starting to sound way too southern in some of your reference wordings. LOL.
But, you know I love ya’ like a pig loves mud! 🙂
Hahahaha! I was being silly. 😉
I still think pigs are fat, ugly creatures not worth eating…except for their bacon, of course. 😉
And please, don’t insult me that way. I am still a northern girl, and I will always be a northern girl! 😛
Twitter: pattistafford
It was a reminder to not forget you’re a northern girl. ;P I get enough southern speak as it is–can’t have my northern girls speaking like my southern girls. LOL
Baby pigs are actually quite adorable–when they are still very small. Too cute!
Bacon and ham are two of my weaknesses, don’t care much for chops, but a good pork roast is nice on the holidays. 🙂
As if I have to be reminded! 😛
I suppose baby pigs are cuter than adult pigs. I just don’t like pigs in general, I guess.
Ham’s okay once in a while, but I don’t eat it often…or any pork, really. Just think of all the crap they eat! O_O
6,160 words! Time to feed the cats.
Taking a quick break. Started off slow – I broke a rule and did a quick online search – not a good idea, I got distracted. Since my storyline involves two Desi men in America, I came across a quick dialogue question needing research regarding their style of speech. So I googled it. But then I came across a few better ideas for those character names than the ones I had, so naturally I had to change them a couple times and test them out loud to see how the names sounded across my tongue. Oh then I came across a video called “You Know You’re A Desi When…” so I had to watch that of course. Sixty minutes later, I was still in the same spot and surprised at how long I took. Then I got smart and took the advice and disconnected my internet altogther and worked to make up the time. I had to reconnect to check back in. Now I need a break but I shall only take 10 minutes, then back to it. 🙂
Isn’t that the way it usually works though, Christy? I know exactly where you are coming from. So @$&% frustrating, isn’t it? I may have to do the same.
Ack! Sex scene! Yikes! Ack! I don’t think I can do it. I’m not sure what moves I want the character to pull, much less what words to use to describe the moves. Ack! (Also, it’s not supposed to be a “good” — romantic, satisfying, etc. — sex scene.) Oh yikes. I think I may skip this and come back to it later after some wine. Or another day. Or never.
I got over myself and wrote it anyway. Actually, I read my planning note more carefully, which reminded me that I had already halfway figured the problem out. Hooray!
7,381 words. Off to get dinner started and stretch a bit. I’ll try to fit a few more words in while it’s cooking, but I need to clean off the counters first (didn’t bother all day since I was writing).
I’m finished! My final word count for today is 10,481! 😀
I didn’t quite get to the end of the backstory, but I’m very close. Damian’s just been banished from Crete, and now he’s gone to Romania, where he’s met one of my other Immortal Watchdogs characters, and this one just happens to be my favorite. 🙂
Let’s hear it for another awesome 10K Day (and let’s face it, is there any other kind?)! 😀
Now I’m going to post my progress on my blogs, then get off here to relax with the hubby. 🙂
Good luck to everyone still writing. You can do it! 😀
Lois, that is awesome. I’m impressed.
Sara
Thank you, Sara! 😀 I’m rather impressed with myself. It was slow going there for a little while, and I wondered if I’d make it. 🙂
Yay to Lois and all you sojourners of the 10K day! I am not done, I’m taking another break to fix dinner constisting of frozen dinners in the microwave and will be working on this yet again after my break. Back soon lovelies.
Thanks, Christy! 😀
Guys, I think I’m going to tap out at 7,970 words. Today’s unwritten scenes are all near the end of my novel, and I think I’d like to mull them a bit more to decide where I’d like them to go.
My first 10K experience was great. I’m so thankful for the opportunity, as well as the tips and tricks. I definitely hope to participate again (although if I’m too busy next month to participate because I’m moving house, that would NOT be a bad thing!).
In addition to the productivity of the day, I’m pleased with how devoting a whole day to the novel and just the novel gave my brain room to think about it and solve some creative hurdles.
Take care everyone. I’ve enjoyed reading about your progress. Millie, I hope your headache is better.
I’m off to clean the kitchen and go for a walk!

Yes, I think I’m done for the night as well. Sounds like today’s 10K has been pretty productive for everyone – yea us!
Congrats to everyone! I had some unexpected things happen today, so I was not able to write as much as I wanted. But I did manage to squeeze in 2513 words, which is pretty awesome for me.
I’ll be ready for Saturday
Wow, last to post on Wednesday and first to post today. Ain’t that somethin’? Well, I slept a lot yesterday and even went to bed around 8:30 pm. I woke up at 1:00 am EST. So, I’m catching up on reader feed posts, etc. Then I’m gonna do some stretching and begin the day. Good luck, everyone!
Twitter: SquarePegKaren
Wonder if that’s some kind of record, Marvin? — I mean the last to post on a Wed 10k and first to post on the following Sat. 10k (not talking about waking at 1 am – tho, argh – that might set a record too)…
I’m not officially “in” this 10k, promised myself I’d get some other things done today – but I wanted to stop over and say Good Luck to everyone who’s playing today — and sending a thanks to Milli – it’s so awesome to have this time saved for us!
Third to check in – hello Marvin – good luck with your day and hello Karen enjoy your day doing other things!
Congrats everyone who participated on Wed.
I’m off to eat breakfast and then get stuck in. Yea! the sun is out today.
catherine
I got a late start and then spent my first two hours journaling. Very hungry and about to eat a hearty brunch with Brian. After that I plan to work on some new stories for my travel blog. Terrible insomnia last night so we’ll see how that goes. Right now I’ve got the dry stares from being so sleep deprived. 🙁

Look at this! I can’t stay away!! I think next month I’ll just sign on for both 10K’s and holler in as I can if it’s a day when I can’t be super committed – because it seems like I’m connected even when I don’t sign up.
I’m happy to report having FINALLY finished a blog post I’ve been working on – now off to some other stuff.
Hello there, Ms. Purple K (Catherine) !! Hope your writing is going well!! Sending happy writing vibes to you all.
Yeah, I’ve had a pretty good day Karen! Thanks for coming back in to say hello and give support. Glad you got your blog post done! I’ll go look tomorrow. 🙂
Milli and Marvin, I hope you both had a good day. I wrote in my journal, no word count.
I’m signing off early today.
cheers!
catherine
Hey all,
Thanks Catherine, Milli and Karen. I’ve had a lot of distractions today. I did get a blog post created, journaled and did some freewriting. I’ve still got 5 hours to go. Enjoyed daughter’s Lacrosse game today. We won! I’ll be back later for final tally. Hope everyone’s having a decent day.
Marvin
I’m afraid the world got the best of me today. I totaled just under 1K. My WIP took me in a new direction and I didn’t have enough research to feel adequate enough to write. I know, I should have just went with the flow. Better luck next month, to everyone.
I never worry anymore about the amount I write on a 10K day. I’m just happy it is a day carved out to do what I want with my writing and share with other writers. Yesterday I knocked off at around 2:30. We had a tough week and my husband and I vegged for the rest of the day reading & watching movies to get our juices back! It worked…
It sounds like you did go with the flow, it’s just a different flow than you originally intended maybe? 🙂
See you next month!
happy sunday,
catherine
