*falls over* Normally, I would be able to bash out around 2,000 words before bed, but exhaustion is creeping up on me. Once I figured out what I was going to write, which took a solid ten minutes of me going through various folders on my flash drive, I got 944 words bashed out.

I’ll join everyone a little bit later. Good luck to all! See you in the daytime!

    Hello everyone!
I could make it on Wednesday *feels like celebrating* 🙂

I woke up not too long ago, decided to sleep in a bit. Feeling pretty rested, so I’m glad I did.
Just having a bowl of apple soup while typing this, uploading/sharing a Picasa WebAlbum, checking e-mails and comments and stuff so those will be out of my way once I start the actual writing.

Today I’m writing from home, which means I’ll have smaller chores (which add up… so) – will be doing them during breaks. I have a new wedding favor order as well and since (I’m never ever taking another urgent order) I have enough time to finish it, I’ll just be making one heart at a time when I take a break or happen to pass through the kitchen, just so I won’t feel like I’m completely ignoring it 😉
My mom had errands to run this morning and will be going to work straight from there, so I have the house to myself until a little after 8pm!

Looking forward to writing (with all of you)!!! See you later.
    Happy writing!

    1. In the first two hour session, I hit 2,978 words.

    2. I’m working on a fiction project.

    3. Feeling good! It feels great to write so fast and to turn off all distractions.

    4. Sipping on a mug of Rooibos tea.

    • Estrella Azul
      June 27, 2012 | 6:25 AM

That is wonderful, David, well done! Fiction is great to write, or at least for me, it always ups my word count in no time 😉

Turning off all the distractions is a must as I’ve also come to realize. I have my phone on “silent” not even “vibrate” so it won’t interrupt the word flow – will call back anyone during breaks.

      Enjoy your tea!

      1. In the second session, I hit 2,168 words, so my current wordcount is 5,146.

      2. Fiction, freewriting and a magazine article

      3. Unsure I’ll hit 10,000 before the day is out!

      4. I had an interesting lunch of leftovers: bean burger, vegetarian chilli, mushy peas and rice.

        1. Okay, I’m at 10,041. Done for the day!

        2. This afternoon I did 5,000 words of freewriting. Felt a bit like cheating, but I’ve never done such a long freewriting session, and I wanted to hit 10,000 words no matter what.

        3. I feel good. I’ve learned a lot from today. Hope I can continue writing this fast and being this disciplined!

        4. This afternoon, water and monkey nuts.

Wow, David, your results for your very first 10K Day are impressive and thrilling. Congratulations!

I know what you mean about feeling like you’re cheating for free-writing. But any writing flow is a noble thing – it’s only our over-achiever side that tries to tell us it only counts for certain “more important” kinds of writing.

I’m pleased to hear you learned a lot from today. If you’d like to be a guest blogger at FoW to share what you’ve learned, you’d be in good company. I’ve had several 10K regulars share what they’ve learned and those are always a great read. I’d be fascinated to hear your take on it.

P.S. Am I the only one who doesn’t know what monkey nuts are? 😀

    Good day happy writers!

I *had* planned to participate today, but it looks like I may only get to shout hoo-hahs! But you can never have too many hoo-hahs.

We didn’t get in until midnight last night. Kevin had a gig playing a sweet 16 birthday party.

I have some freelance work to get out of the way and then maybe I can get to some fiction work.

Hope everyone is having a great day of writerly fun!

      Hi Patti 🙂

The Sweet 16 birthday party sounded fun. Hope you had a good time.

Hey, if you’re doing freelance work, you can count those words here. You don’t have to be writing only fiction to do your check-ins here.

Hope to hear from you again later today.

Most of my writing today was non-fiction, so you should go ahead and leave your word count if you want to.

And thank you, you can never have enough hoo-hahs 😉

    Good Morning Everyone,

I’ve been sick for the past week with a chest cold so I let myself sleep late. I’ve got a list of things I’m eager to write but I’m going to take it easy, write slow and take lots of extra breaks. The worst of the cold is over but I still need to be gentle on myself.

OK, off to make cappuccino and then dive into some journaling before I start on my list.

      Good morning Milli,

sorry to hear you’re not completely well yet, good thing you let yourself sleep late.
Do take many extra breaks and just enjoy a day of writing and resting *sending healing thoughts*
      Enjoy that cappuccino 🙂

I’ve crossed off (just counted) eight things off my to-write list! (And just posted one of them as a blog post.) They’re all shorter writings, but I’ve built my list for today AND Saturday combined. So I am getting all the small stuff out of the way now and leaving the fun fiction part mostly for Saturday.
I’m just shy of 5K at the moment 🙂

      Happy writing!

Thanks for your caring words, Estrella. 🙂 Considering how fired up I am to write the stuff on my list, I’m doing a good job of keeping my pace slow and nurturing. Just finished 5 pages of handwritten journaling for a word count of 700.

Congrats on your progress! I saw your blog post come through in my email. Good one. And getting the small stuff out of the way so you can enjoy fiction-writing on Saturday sounds like a great plan.

I’m off to cook some breakfast. Poached eggs and French toast (the toaster variety – I found a yummy brand).

Well done, you do seem fired up – but be nurturing with yourself!

I never really had both days at my disposal, so I’m really excited that I’m getting all the non-fiction stuff done today and that I’ll have the whole Saturday to write away on flash fiction and poems!

Thanks, glad you liked the blog post. I started reading the post which inspired it last week, but then procrastinated from actually writing it 😉 You know how that goes.

          I’m past 7K now!

I’ve been hearing your excitement about having two 10K Days at your disposal this month ever since your first check-in this morning. I’m over the moon for you. 🙂

    Hello all! I’m back!!

I’m at work today, but we are having a very slow week and most of my job today will involve writing and typing things. Spent a good while cleaning the office and making my daily to-do list so that I have everything in order.

I plan on doing 100 word sprints in between jobs to give my brain a change of pace. Word count is still at 944 and I’m not sure what I’ll tackle first. I have more research to do before I can work on the term paper due on Sunday and my brain is on a “work work work” binge. I should probably appease it while I still have the motivation!

Sounds like everyone is well underway! Good luck!

I’m just past 5,000 words (5,001 to be exact). Tackled one of the smaller notebooks for work and got quite a few words from it!

Right now I’m battling the heat (it’s 102 degrees and for the next week, the high temps range between 103-107) so that’s affected my writing a little bit. I have to kick my air conditioner to make it work every once in a while.

Hopefully I can work on some fiction soon. My muse is in the corner sulking because she’s being ignored.

Congrats to everyone who has already pushed past 10K!

Ugh! Right now, the only AC we have is a new window unit in my studio. The central AC picked a fine time to stop working. My mom’s flying in on Saturday, and with this heat wave, there’s no way we can let her suffer without some nice cool air. We’ve got work being done so that we can have a new unit installed, but if it’s not done in time, we’ve got back-up plans in place.

Anyway, awesome word count, Laura! Keep it up! 😀 I’m stopping at 3,093. 😉 I hope to join in from the road on Saturday. That’s if I can get a connection between here and Little Rock.

Wish we could have come down there, but we were stuck waiting for the carpenter to see what work we need him to do. He didn’t come until around 5:30! (Of course, we usually go to the kids’ place on Tuesday nights, but I plan to change that once in a while–especially around November).

I’m from the northeast, and even though it’s been a lot of years since I’ve been back there, I still prefer cooler summers (90* for a high would be heaven right now!).

apparently my head didn’t get the memo that today is a writing day. My mom is home now and making me listen to the TV since she’s watching – good thing I finished my writing just before she arrived home!

I finished my 10K Day with a total word count of 10652 words. Super excited!
And hungry. Going to have dinner now and a glass of wine to celebrate my achievement! 🙂

        Congratulations!!! 😀

One of these months, I’m going to have to actually shoot for 10K. I haven’t for a long time, because I just haven’t had the time. I’ll have to make the time, and plan for it in advance!

          Thank you!

I was in the same position for a long time, Lois. Also, I missed last month’s 10K days entirely as I had to go in to work on Saturday as well.

Milli’s course, Ace Your 10K Day, actually helped a lot in my getting everything organized and ready to enjoy a whole day of writing. I probably would’ve aced my April 10K day as well, if it weren’t for a bad case of insomnia the night before.

I wasn’t supposed to have the day off yesterday, but then I did, and knew I had to spend it writing. It completely paid off!

We’re all constantly busy, it seems. The answer “I’m good, thanks” to the question “How are you” has been replaced by “I’m so busy”. And validly so, I know firsthand how hectic things can get with work, and life being life, demanding our attention.
So sometimes, one just has to say “No” and carve out some writing time anyway.
The thrill you get from writing so much will force all the busy and annoying stuff to stay away – or at least be much more tolerable.
(i.e. my mom completely lashed out at me last night after my reaching 10K for the first time ever. She isn’t talking to me this morning either.
But hey, she wasn’t the one working on her sanity by taking a day just for writing, so I’m not letting it bother me this time!)

PS: Yes. I write, because there’s nothing else to better keep me on the right track of sanity – or prove the lack thereof all at once 😉

                That’s awesome! 😀

Well, I’m taking steps to gain more time for writing. I’ve unsubscribed from certain e-mail newsletters, and I have more to go still. My biggest problem, I think, is trying to keep up with all my different blogs. I don’t post very often for lack of time, but I don’t want to give up my blogs because I’d lose touch with some of the people there. I already rarely go to Facebook or Twitter (mostly just answer comments people have left me–most of the people there are the people I know IRL, and I never see them because they live so far away). I’m not sure what more I can do, honestly. My mornings are for me (mostly for fitness and taking care of the house, but also taking care of the fish and other things). I’ll figure it out. It’s just going to take time.

                Haha!

Those are some great first steps.

                  Throwing some ideas around:
Is there a way you could maybe merge your blogs?
Like for example, if you drop by my blog, you’ll see that I love so many different things, but didn’t split them up. I post my Creative Writing, Recipes, Craft tutorials/Homemade recipes/etc., I started a Seasonal Photo Challenge and so on all in one place. They all go into different categories and I listed them under my blog header for easy access.
You could then make up a once a week or three days a week blogging schedule and post something different each week or each day.
(My posting schedule is loosely every two days overall or just Monday and Wednesdays.)

                  Hope this helps 🙂

                    June 30, 2012 | 4:19 PM

Unfortunately, that wouldn’t work for me, as I have followers from different Web sites, and I’d lose touch with people I don’t want to. As it is now, I have to copy and paste from one blog to another whenever I do post, which isn’t often to begin with (I used to blog every day). Your idea would work if everyone was in one place. I wish they were. It would make things a lot easier. 😉

                    Thanks!

It’s not much, but I did a word count check, and I’m at 922 words. I was going to make some decaf and think about how to transition into the next part, but I was too eager to write, so I already transitioned. However, the next part is where his story really begins, so I’m going to go fix that decaf now and think on it for a few minutes before I dive in again.

Managed to get a short story written. not sure about the ending yet. It’s about 1000 words now added to the other writing from today I am at about 2750. Might get to write a bit more tonight.

I’m stalled out at 5,321. Tried working on two different projects but my rhythm got screwed by a printer problem and waiting on hold with HP for a solid hour didn’t help.

I switched the music I was listening to (from Linkin Park’s newest album to the score from Hannah by the Chemical Brothers) and the different pace in the music is changing the pace in my brain.

What I’m going to work on is something I’m not too sure about. It’s a lot more action-filled than what I normally write and I almost think it would be better suited as a screenplay, but as I’ve never even attempted to write one of those, I’m sticking to novel format.

Awesome on the 8,655, Laura! I just knew you’d bounce back.

I can relate to the part about after the sun goes down. It always takes me hours to get my day into gear, and I do my best work in the afternoons and evenings. (And by pulling the occasional late-nighter.) If I didn’t have to fit with my husband’s more normal schedule, I would be a dedicated night-owl writer, for sure. 🙂

        Thanks!

I’m a night owl and I always have been. I think it’s because I don’t have the subconscious want to go outside and play with nature, although with temps in the 100’s by noon, that want has been curbed.

If my work schedule didn’t exist, I would probably sleep in the day and be active at night. My brain just doesn’t like to shut off. All nighters are common with me. But yay writing!

But instead I’ve been working on the articles I wrote today, editing them, adding images and getting ready to publish. So at least it’s 10K Day *related.* And for some reasons that’s not draining me.

Really wanted to work on the article I interviewed you for. 🙂 But I think I’ll need more strength for that one. Hopefully I can work on it during Saturday’s 10K Day. Can’t wait!

At 7016 words, I finished all the fiction I had started and hanging in the air, and even some extra pieces. It’s been a good day, not even sure how long ago it was when I had everything finished!
Now, I’m calling it a day. The house is all noisy again anyway and I can’t concentrate anymore…
(I might come back to it tonight, will see.)

    Happy writing to everyone!

That totally rocks, Estrella! Not just your word count of 7016 (sounds like a lucky number) but the fact of having all of your outstanding fiction pieces finished. That must feel GREAT!

We’ll be here if you find you can return this evening (your time) for a little more writing.

Thanks. It does feel great, that’s why I’m letting myself off the hook with aiming for the rest 3K 😉

Will check in if I come back tonight. *hugs*

Besides, you busted 10,000 words on Wednesday. Having 17K+ words to show for your week means you qualify to let yourself off the hook for another 3K. 😉

7K is still really impressive and like Milli said, you hit 10K on Wednesday! Go you!

Still not back to my normal energy after this beastly cold. I’ve managed to make it to 1880 words with some journaling and one article. Don’t want to push myself to go any faster, so I’m just tortoising along today.

Just made a fresh cappuccino and ready to start an article that should be pretty short and easy to write. (Famous last words. :D)

    Hoo-Hah!

I’ve done a lot of thinking today–mostly all writing related, of course. 😉

The only thing I managed to write was a new blog post about hiring fiction writers.

Hope everyone is having a great day!

Thinking is good. It feeds the writing.

Considering how little sleep you’re running on, I reckon a new blog post is good work for today. Congrats!

Getting a slow start today. Spent a good hour and a half with an iced coffee on the back porch until temps climbed above 100 (which was at one, ugh), then retreated inside. Did some laundry, made various lists, and now I’m settling in with a snow cone and an itch to write.

    Good luck to all!

Ahh, the iced coffee and snow cone both sound divine.

After two days in the high 90s, we’ve at least dropped back to the upper 80s here in Ohio. Which is a relief, because all we have is an ancient window AC unit at the far end of the house from my office. I can run that thing all day and still be sweating in my writing chair at the other end of the hallway.

      Have fun scratching that itch!

We’ve hit the hundreds before 2 PM everyday for almost two weeks now. The entire state of Arkansas is under a burn ban and fire hazard emergency, along with a fireworks ban. Water conservations will be rolling out soon. Typical southern summer.

We run our AC like crazy in the summer. Recently, we had another vent run into my room because I have three outside walls and the temp in my room was about 5 degrees hotter than the hallway. Ugh!

My term paper is first, so that’s icky, but the motivation to finish so I can do other writing projects is strong. That said, off I go! Good luck on your articles!

Speaking of the burn ban, is it illegal to grill with charcoal during one? Chelsey asked, since we were planning to have a cookout (we’ve decided to err on the side of caution and order Eureka instead), and we’ve been wondering ever since. I think common sense dictates that we don’t, but that’s just me.

Our house was about 5* hotter than the outside when our AC stopped working late last week. We started keeping windows open and the attic fan on high, and it made it about 5* cooler than outside. Thank God Jeff thought to get me a window unit for the studio–the hottest room in the house during the summer–and the pets and I could spend our days back there this week! Our AC has been installed (they came and did it yesterday–just in time for my mom’s arrival), and all is again right with the world–or will be, once I resume writing. 😉

          Good luck, Laura!

I just checked with the local country website and it is illegal to burn with anything that could spark a wildfire, including charcoal grills. We have an induction grill as well, so we’re restricted to that for now.

            Stay cool, Lois!

We have a Foreman grill, but it’s just not the same. Well, pizza was good–along with salad, blueberry parfaits, and lemonade punch, so all’s well.

Thanks, Laura. I appreciate the info.!

              You stay cool, too!

I didn’t start writing until we were about 30-45 minutes out from Little Rock. I’m about to pick it up again. I don’t really feel on working on my “real” stories today, so I’m playing around with a Stargate:SG1 fan fiction piece. I won’t publish it to any fan fiction sites. I don’t write a lot of fan fiction, and I don’t really read it, either, but every once in a while I get an idea and have to run with it. This is just for fun. 🙂

I only have about an hour or so left to write (unless I write some tonight), so I’d better get to it.

    Good luck everyone! 😀

      Hi, Lois 🙂

Thanks for reporting from the road. Writing something for fun sounds like a good way to do a little 10King while you’re out traveling. Have a safe trip and happy writing!

        Hi Milli! 😀

You’re welcome. 🙂 The trip started out a little rough, but once we hit the highway, it was smooth sailing. And I had fun writing. Just didn’t do nearly as much of it as I’d planned to. But it was a few hundred words I didn’t have before I started, right? 🙂

Just realized I haven’t updated in a while. I’m on 3499 and still crawling along. In the middle of another article as we speak.

With the 3499 I already had, plus an article I just finished for 1663, I’ve reached 5162 for the day.

Considering how drained I still feel by the aftermaths of this cold, I’m very happy with that. I’m going to quit writing now and switch to editing, which will be less taxing.

Brian’s in the kitchen making us spaghetti bolgnese for dinner. My appetite wasn’t too great while I was sick but I’m happy to report that I’m RAVENOUS!

Slow going day, mostly because I’m doing 95% research and 5% actual writing. Word count is just past 2,000. For now, dinner. I always get great ideas when I cook so here’s hoping I can come back and bash some more words out.

Got so busy with life and writing that I forgot all about checking back into this. Perhaps next time! (I think I managed to come close to 10K most days that week). Great idea!

      Hi Terri,

Thanks for coming back to update us, and well done on all those 10K days!

The July dates are Wed the 25th and Sat the 28th. Hope you can join us. 🙂
