WELCOME TO ALL those plucky writers who are participating this week!

This is the place to post your check-ins for Wed, Feb 19 and/or Saturday, Feb 22.

If you’re participating from overseas, feel free to start according to your own time zone. This check-in page is posted the day before the event so you can. 🙂

DON’T FORGET TO TAKE REGULAR BREAKS!

You’ll regret it later (when you’re feeling fried) if you don’t take regular breaks. Even if you’re on fire with your writing, take your scheduled breaks.

Every two hours is recommended. Breaks are also for posting check-ins.

WHAT SHOULD YOU POST FOR YOUR CHECK-INS?

TIP: If you don’t see your comment right away after posting, try refreshing your screen.

1. You can mention your word count if you want to. If you’d rather not, please comment about your progress thus far.

2. You can also describe what you’re working on.

3. Feel free to mention how you’re feeling and how the day is going for you.

4. It’s always fun to hear what people are drinking, snacking on or listening to.

DON’T FORGET TO log out of forums, Facebook, Twitter, email, etc.

Go gettum, Tigers! – Milli

I’m here, after a good night’s sleep. About to make cappuccino and then I’m going to indulge first in some journaling. I’ve barely had time to journal for months so this will be like eating candy.

I wanted so much to join in today, but it looks like I’ll have to sit this one out. I overdid it this past weekend, and my right hand is a little achy. I want it to recover, so I’m taking it easy.

If I can be here on Saturday, even for a little bit, I will be.

Good luck to everyone participating! 🙂

Bummer, Lois. I will miss you today. 🙁

Have you ever tried Dragon or a similar speech recognition program so you can talk your stories instead of typing? There’s also a free one that comes with Microsoft Office. You just have to train it (which can be frustrating) but then you won’t have to pay for new software.

(Tell me to go soak my head if we’ve already had this conversation. LOL I’m always popping up recommending Dragon to people.)

Anyway, I can’t remember where in Office you have to look to access the free one, but here’s an article that might help, if you think you might want to try it:

      http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2010/05/win-7s-built-in-speech-recognition-a-review

      • Lois
        February 19, 2014 | 2:32 PM

Haha! Yes, I’ve tried Dragon, and I hate it with a passion! 😛 It slows down my computer, and it creates more editing work for me, as it’s not very accurate.

Not to mention that “talking” my stories takes me out of “the Zone.” When I’m writing, I’m the character. When I’m talking, it’s too distracting, and I can’t “become” that character, as I hear my voice and not theirs.

I really love the Swype app for Android. Problem is, of all my apps, I can only use it on my phone. It’s no longer compatible with Kindle, and I can’t get it for my Nextbook tablet. And I don’t much like SwiftKey, as it’s not nearly as accurate.

Best thing I can do is just take it easy for a bit. I should be fine by this weekend. I haven’t been typing much today, and they’re feeling a bit better. I’m just not ready today. 😉

Thanks, Milli. I appreciate it! *hugs*

      • Lois
        February 19, 2014 | 2:34 PM

Ahem…of all my devices, I can only use Swype on my phone. 😉

Lois, that’s very interesting. Just goes to show, every writer has to find her own right way. Write way. 😀

Glad the break is helping your achy hand feel better already. Hoping you can join us, even for just a little bit of writing, on Saturday!

          Love Ya ~ Milli

          • Lois
            February 19, 2014 | 3:21 PM

When I was using Dragon, I went through a ton of stress–to the point of pain–because I was still doing too much and not giving myself time to mend.

Now, I’ve been giving myself that time when I need it, and it’s so much better. Plus, I’ve lightened my non-writing (still involves typing, but it’s not my writing) load a lot, and I think that’s helped more than anything–well, besides taking time off. 😉

So yeah, if I can’t type, I either take time off, or I use a tablet and “swype” instead of “type.” Even thought it’s a lot slower, I still get to write, and that’s important! 😀

And thanks! I’m hoping to join you on Saturday, too! 😀

            Love you too, Milli! 🙂

I’m really happy with my journaling so far today – 6 full handwritten pages, so I figure I’m at 900 words already.

I’m just bursting at the seams today and it feels good. I think Milli’s magical sidekick must have flown over here and sprinkled some writing mojo dust on me while I was sleeping last night 😀

I’ve produced only 700 words of journaling but it’s been freakishly fun, like major playtime. I’m writing in my Moon Goddess journal in various colored gel pens and using stickers to illustrate.

I did have a plan for today but I’ve tossed it aside in favor of the magic that emerged as I journaled. I was given a new screenplay idea, as well as reminded about a story I had worked on years ago but never finished.

I’m off to have some breakfast (hate to tear myself away but I’m FAMISHED) and then I’m going to see where the fun takes me.

    Heigh-ho, Fellow 10Kers!

Wow, the energy is vibrating at the highest cosmic levels in here today! Magic dust? Flying fingers? Canceling appointments and clearing the decks for more writing? AIEE! It’s infectious. You guys are all so inspiring!

I just slurped down a bowl of hot and sour soup my husband whipped up for me, and I’m finishing up my first cup of coffee. Soup and coffee? you ask. Surprisingly, it’s working for me! I’m all fueled up and ready to go.

I’ll be working on my novel today, with the goal of passing the 40K mark (that will mean about 3K words today). The plot lines are boiling up to critical events in the story, and I feel both challenged and excited to write it through. Wish me luck!

And good luck to all of you today!

I have no idea what my word count is. I’m having such a mind-blowing experience I don’t even care. I’m feeling the need to get grounded, so I’m going to feng shui my desk (dust & declutter it), then have a shower and get dressed (still in my jammies at 3:55 heehee) and have a snack. When I come back I’m going to reconnect with a story I gave up on during a very dark period of my life. I’ve just been shown a way to resurrect it.

        Thanks, Carole. 😀

The story is based on a writing prompt from my book. A prompt that wasn’t in the second edition, but it will make its appearance in the 3rd edition due to be released next month.

It was one of those stories that makes you go “Holy Moly, where did THIS come from?” I didn’t have enough self-belief at the time to take it beyond the initial rush of words that came out before I knew what was happening. But maybe that’s a good thing. Maybe it receded into the background until I developed certain parts of myself that are stronger and more vibrant now. I can’t wait to see what happens. 🙂

Hey All – congratulations everyone on your remarkable accomplishments today! I love the camaraderie of the 10K day. Knowing you’re all out there dedicating this time to your creativity feels inspiring and supportive.

It’s slow, thoughtful going for me today, which is okay. I’ve been writing at a breakneck pace in the past weeks. As I come to these critical points in the novel, I think it’s the right thing to slow down and choose just the right words, the right feelings. There’s some stuff coming up for my characters, characters I’m attached to and protective of, that must happen but I’m dreading it anyway. I want to slow down a bit and give these guys my attention and respect. And that approach is working.

Mmmm, Milli, a snack sounds good right about now. CHOCOLATE sounds good right about now. When we were in Las Vegas, Matt bought me a Bounty bar at the international market. !!!! It’s still sitting on the kitchen counter. I think it’s calling my name.

So, I’m at about 1,500 words and I think I’m going to take a break, eat chocolate, and maybe watch a movie with my husband before resuming (he’s off work today). I am still in my jammies and probably will remain here.

    Virtual hugs all around!

Leigh, your intuitive pace and loving attention to your characters with this critical part of your novel sounds just right. I’m on tenterhooks with you to make sure the Right Ones get your protection and the Other Ones reap what they have sown. But before then, there’s the danger that must be passed through. I agree with all your feelings about that.

You’ve got a Bounty?? OMG. I’m now craving a Bounty. I’m not a huge coconut fan but those things are GOOD. And they remind me of Australia. Please think of me as you nibble, or gorge on it, as the case may be.

I’m going to finish the journaling I was doing before dinner—regarding all the aspects in which I’m about to reconnect with the story that languished in my files for so long—before embarking on the actual story.

Gorgeous Ladies of 10K Awesomeness: I salute you!

Congratulations, Carole, Charlotte, Lois and Milli! I doff my hat in honor of your achievements. What a day!

I finished the chapter, falling just short of my goal at 39,600 words (2,300 words today). It’s so funny and weird, I didn’t even reach the point I was expecting to write about today, but instead found this particular character had something else to do before getting to that episode. I am always tickled and surprised when that happens.

I’m settling down to watch Justified with my husband. I *heart* Raylan Givens, and reflect upon what a masterful storyteller Elmore Leonard was. Rest in peace, Mr. Leonard.

I may dive back in to begin the next chapter before the night is done, but I’m pleased with what came out on the page today.

Milli, I am thrilled to hear that you will be reentering the world of your story. And applause to Brian for plying you with Indian delicacies and minty chocolate treats.

Novellas and journaling and creative non-fiction, oh my! I am in awe of the 10K crew.

I’m enjoying a glass of red wine, too! An feeling grateful for all of you, for today, and for the muse who speaks to all of us.

PS, Charlotte — Milli may have already said this, but a Bounty bar is a British/Aussie take on coconut and chocolate, like a Mounds bar sent from heaven. I haven’t had one in ages. I decided to save it for now, and instead partook of a Toblerone hiding in the kitchen cabinet. For your writing efforts today, you have earned a whole truckload of Bounty bars, or whatever sweet treat that floats your sweet tooth boat. xo

      Good Morning, Lois!

Yes, we shall be here when you arrive sometime after lunch. Leigh and I will be here for sure, Lori G. had RSVP’d for today and possibly Sue Jeffels.

Bev will also be here, but she’s a nocturnal writer so you may not cross paths with her today.

Get those groceries done so you can join us!

It took a lot longer than I thought it would, since after we came home, we went back out to go to Ace Hardware and then Paul’s Bakery (their cookies and donuts are incredible, but we don’t get them often, so I couldn’t pass that up!).

Now I’m here and ready to do some freewriting! 😀

And I’ve got Yogi Relaxed Mind tea. I’ve never tried it before, but it’s supposed to help with relaxation and creativity! 🙂

            Haha!

Paul’s Bakery is awesome! I don’t usually get their cakes (too much sugar!), but I love their cookies–unfrosted, of course. We got peanut butter cookies and oatmeal raisin cookies. They’re soft and soooooo good!

And so was my (unsweetened) Yogi tea! 😀

Good morning ladies. I have had a slow start today. Pushing through barriers that crept in over the last week or so while I wasn’t paying attention. I completed one blog post based on a writing exercise to help. I’m sitting at about 600 words and going to pull out my journal and write in hopes of determining where I am headed.

I’ve birthed approx. 1K multi-colored words in my moon goddess journal. I’m hungry, chilly and I want more coffee. Also need to find a way to switch gears emotionally after journaling about some dreams last night that churned up old stuff. I’ll have to figure out how to do that after I’ve satisfied my physical needs.

Thanks, Lori. The break did help. While preparing breakfast, I connected some more dots regarding some life and creativity issues (which was happening like crazy on Wednesday as well) and that showed me the way forward. I’ve had a complete shift in emotional energy and now I’m looking forward to the next part. It will be a combo of stories and journaling.

Well that was a surprise! Two pages into my journaling where my pen felt like a sword pushing back the doubts and excuses one of my newest characters showed up with an announcement. A totally unexpected announcement. I knew I needed to work with that story sometime this week but now I am caught off guard. After a few days of my characters going into hiding, it was good to see one again even if they plan to send me into a tailspin.

About 750 words of journalling long hand and about 500 on an upcoming blog story that includes a book review. This puts me in the neighborhood of 1800 words. I’ll take it. Though I have more questions than answers at this time.

Lori, what an awesome update. I loved the way you said “my pen felt like a sword pushing back the doubts and excuses.” So poetic.

Your character showing up unexpectedly with a surprise announcement sounds exciting. And that feeling of going into a tailspin sounds like a lucky omen. The dread, adventure and mystery of going into the unknown with our characters. There’s nothing else like it!

Can’t wait for your next report.

I’m on 1,630 words and about to graduate from my moon goddess journal to the keyboard. The process of journaling really went to the heart of the matter and I was given answers I didn’t know were waiting in the wings. The writing I’ll be doing next will put those solutions into action. Can’t wait to see how it all pans out.

But first I’m going to make another cappuccino.

I do not know where I am going with my characters surprise announcement. So I ignored it for now. Instead I pulled together thoughts about my writing process for a presentation I am part of on Monday. At five and a bit pages of handwriting, I hope I don’t take more time than I have been given. Time for a late lunch after which I will see what happens with the surprises of earlier.

Estimates of about 1600 more words. I’ll add to it and total it later when my brain cells have been fed.

I’m about to do some freewriting. This won’t be anything McCabe Saga-related. Just want to write something different today. And isn’t that sometimes part of the fun–writing new things with no expectations of where it will head? I plan to make at least one new discovery with this. Who knows? Maybe I’ll come up with a new character or a new story idea! 🙂

Yes, it is! And I discovered a new character, learned a few things about her, but I didn’t get anywhere near the 2.5-3K I wanted. My final word count was only 501, but I’m happy anyway. 🙂

I’m just under 3K so far. It’s been a slow and relaxed but intense exploration of something that’s been holding me back for a long time—today feels like major revelations and solutions falling into place. Can’t rush the process; it wants to go at snail’s pace. I’m also lingering a lot so I can enjoy it.

I’m craving chocolate lava cake but I have nothing faintly resembling it in the house.

Lois, I had hot chocolate with toast for dunking the other night when I badly needed some comfort food.

But today the best replacement I could find for chocolate lava cake was to dunk a dark chocolate biscotti in my cappuccino. Pretty good.

        • Lois
          February 22, 2014 | 8:03 PM

Oooh, I love Nonni’s biscotti. Have you ever tried it?

I tried baking biscotti once (twice baked, actually!), when we lived up in Joplin, but it didn’t come out very good. Our oven was crap. Haha!

Instead of bitter hot chocolate, we’re going to have popcorn, cheese, and Yellow Tail Sweet Red Roo! 🙂

Hearing about your Yellow Tail made me pour a small glass of Robert Mondavi cab-sauv to have with the square of salted almond dark chocolate I’m savoring in niblets.

            Enjoy your popcorn!

Lunch and a couple hands of a card game cleared my head. I returned to see where my characters surprise was taking us. He is a new character I was working with for a short project. Seems he is taking a larger role elsewhere. I had left a short story hanging. It is turning into a longer story and my character is on his way to help in a crisis. Lots of action and lots of questions. Which probably means lots of editing in my future. For now, played with a dialogue heavy section and found a few more surprises. looked back at my last update and see my brain cells were really misfiring and my estimate of words did not add up. Recalculating and adding this burst of writing I am in around 4K. The hand cramps from holding the pen to tight are driving me to take a break and find a snack.

Lori, I loved hearing more about your character surprises. The 4K is awesome and the character that grew beyond his initial short story role sounds invigorating. I know what you mean about the hand cramping. I was having that too until I switched from journaling to the keyboard.

I didn’t get nearly as much written as I wanted, but I’ve got the beginnings of what I think will be a fun freewrite. Unexpected things will happen. I just don’t know what they are yet. 😀

So, my final word count for today is a very small count of 501 words, but I don’t mind.

I set up two new Scrivener projects. One is for a book of prompts, and one is for a freewriting journal. I worked on the first freewrite today. 🙂

It takes place in the Berkshires. (Ah, home!)

And I set up an account on Instagram, finally! 😀

So, I’m going to get off here and do some relaxing while Jeff takes his shower, then we’ll have some slow cooked Italian style meatballs on wheat sandwich rolls. Yummy. (I posted a pic on Facebook on Thursday night: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151853951351707&set=a.10150971709076707.412594.521396706&type=1&theater) And yes, he did eat it all. Haha!

Anyway, I’ve got to run, so I wish you all a lot of luck with your word counts tonight. Have fun, and make awesome discoveries! 😀

Lois, 501 words that you enjoyed writing is simply adorable. You’ve set the scene for some fun writing later, and sometimes that’s just the ticket.

Hi Milli! I’m here. I’m at about 2,200 words. My goal today is to reach 50K in the novel and to finish the current chapter. That means I need to write another 1,500 words or so. I guess I’m focusing more on finishing the chapter than word count!

Sublime! I love to hear that!
I just finished the chapter. Holy cow. I was filled with a lot of doubt and uncertainty today. I wasn’t sure I could write this episode, if it would be any good, if it would come out the way it needed to. I kept telling myself “Just write, Leigh. Worry about how it comes out later.”

And by some miracle it came out the way it was meant to. It may need a bit of tweaking here and there, but I am pleased with it. And now I know where I need to go next.

I’m at 49,500 words. I’m going to take a break, and then read it again. Then I might dive into the next chapter…or I might pour a glass of wine and watch “Girls.”

Thinking of you (and the other 10Kers) and hoping you are getting where you want to go!
