WELCOME TO ALL those plucky writers who are participating this week!

This is the place to post your check-ins for Wed, March 19 and/or Saturday, March 22.

If you’re participating from overseas, feel free to start according to your own time zone. This check-in page is posted the day before the event so you can. 🙂

DON’T FORGET TO TAKE REGULAR BREAKS!

You’ll regret it later (when you’re feeling fried) if you don’t take regular breaks. Even if you’re on fire with your writing, take your scheduled breaks.

Every two hours is recommended. Breaks are also for posting check-ins.

WHAT SHOULD YOU POST FOR YOUR CHECK-INS?

TIP: If you don’t see your comment right away after posting, try refreshing your screen.

1. You can mention your word count if you want to. If you’d rather not, please comment about your progress thus far.

2. You can also describe what you’re working on.

3. Feel free to mention how you’re feeling and how the day is going for you.

4. It’s always fun to hear what people are drinking, snacking on or listening to.

DON’T FORGET TO log out of forums, Facebook, Twitter, email, etc.

Go gettum, Tigers! – Milli

Am I the first to check in? Really? 😛

Well, I forgot to tell you, Milli, that Eva Marie Grant is me. I tweeted from that account, and I’d meant to email you sooner, but I forgot! Eva’s my pen name for my fantasy stories, including Immortal Watchdogs and my new Traveler. 🙂

Anyway, I’m about to go take a shower, but when I get back, I’m going to create a couple of writing prompts then start on some freewriting. My goal for today is to get at least 5K words. I’ll count any story planning I do into that, too. And the prompts. After all, they’re new words that have to do with fiction! 😀

And I’ll likely have some Yogi Detox tea, seaweed snacks, and a banana for writing fuel, too. 🙂

    Good luck to everyone participating!

    ~Lois/Eva

      Good Morning Eva Marie/Lois,

It all seems so obvious now, in hindsight, that you are Eva Marie. When I was replying to you on Twitter, I recognized the title of your story, Immortal Watchdogs—but I know you have a writing partner that you co-write stories with so I assumed it was her. LOL!

Sounds like you’ve got some great approaches for fueling up your 10K Day. Enjoy, Lois. 🙂

I think you’re thinking of my roleplay partner. 😉 W don’t really write stories together. Our styles are waaaay too different.

I’m having lunch now–breaded shrimp, fries, and grilled corn! 😀

And iced tea. Yes, I need a little caffeine. Haha!

Hi guys! I’ve been up since 5:30 (I wake up at that time naturally) and my word count so far is 1785. I’m going for 5K today, as I have a meeting mid-day and things I really should do this afternoon. (We’ll see about that.) I’m going to take a break to shower and eat and then get back to it!

      Good Morning, Charlotte,

I’d like to, but then I’d feel like I’ve got all this stuff to do, and it would weigh on me. So I take care of other matters, then I write with the feeling that I’ve earned it. Haha!

I got a late start today. I have done some journaling and two blog articles (that hopefully actually get typed this time). My word count is approximately 1900. The computer has too many distractions, I have to write long hand or I get nothing done. I have a few more short articles I hope to do before jumping into a longer WIP. My goal for the day is 5K.

Hi Lori, glad to see you here. 1900 words so far is very decent for a late start.

Writing longhand definitely has a different effect in the brain. Computers can never replace that.

Best of luck with your goal of 5K!

      March 19, 2014 | 11:39 AM

And your goal is the same as mine (though I wouldn’t balk at more!). 🙂

  6. Lois
    March 19, 2014 | 11:44 AM

I’ve had to stop a couple of times to do research, so I’ve only got 1,387 words right now. I think it will be smooth sailing from here, though. 🙂

I’ve been coming up with the initial conflict in my Traveler’s backstoryl He’s a member of an angelic race called the Zares [like Ares, but with a z in front of it] who left the heavenly realm to live among mortal beings on various planets. His name is Kalin Avaturian, but he goes by Lucas Gade after his powers are bound, his memories are wiped, and he’s banished to Earth for committing one of the highest laws of the Travelers.

So, I’m working on this initial conflict. Basically freewriting ideas for what might have happened to land him on Planet Earth without any memory of who he is. 🙂

And once I’m done with this, I’ll work on an Immortal Watchdogs freewrite. 😀

It’s been a lot of fun to freewrite different scenes, that’s for sure. 🙂

He just had recurring nightmares about what he did that caused his banishment and binding. He actually remembered his sister enough to draw her. 🙂

I don’t know if he’ll remember anything before it gets to the end of the story, but I’m having fun exploring! 😀

Well, it’s now 6.23 pm and I’ve managed 4,352 words which is more than I’ve written in a day for at least a year! I’m going to take a break and see if I can carry on for a bit longer. I’d like to get to at least 7,000 if I can but I have to admit, I’m feeling a bit hollowed out right now.

      Hi Jill,

I was hoping you’d join us today. Sounds like you might be reporting in from the UK?

Congratulations on the 4,352 words! That must feel awesome.

I know that hollowed out feeling. One of my secret weapons is to have a long hot shower and just let my mind drift. I’ve often felt reinvigorated from a shower even at times when I thought I couldn’t write another word.

Best of luck with it! Would love to hear your final report.

        Hi Milli,

Yes, I’m from the UK, a little town called Frome near Bath in the south west of England.

Thanks for today, it’s been a great inspiration. I had an hour of relaxing after the words dried up on me, and then managed a total of 6,546 which is the most I’ve ever written in a day.

Well done to everyone on great word counts. It’s a great feeling to write full on with a group of other writers all doing the same.

Feel like I’ve really got a grip on my story now, because I had to plan a few scenes ahead so I was ready for today.

Would love to come back for another go!

          Hi Jill,

It’s lovely to get acquainted with you.

I looked up Frome and it said “One of the best places to live in Britain.” Sounds like you might get a lot of visitors passing through? Maybe on their way to Bath, etc. Is it a little tourist town unto itself?

I run a travel blog for fun, Milliver’s Travels, if you’d ever like to write about Frome. 🙂

I’m glad you found today inspirational. Congratulations on the 6,546 words and setting your new personal record for the most words written in a day. I’m pleased to hear you also got a better grip on your story through the process of preparing for today.

I see you’ve subscribed to the blog, which means you’ll receive future RSVP invitations and event posts. We would definitely love to have you back!

I’m stopping at 5,177 words for the day. I have some roleplay stuff to take care of before the actual roleplay, then I need to do some story planning if I don’t feel too wiped after the roleplay.

Or I may just spend some time reading. I’ve just begun Russell Blake’s Jet, and I want to finish it by the end of the month, because my book for April will be delivered to my Kindle on the first. I can’t wait! 😀

lunch with grade six, seven and eight can be exhausting or exhilarating. Still waiting to decide how todays is going to affect things. There were conflicts a plenty which could come in handy as I write conflicts into my story. Besides breaking for lunch at the school, I have written a number of small items that were on my list. I am estimating about 3K total so far. Just about done the small stuff and ready to dig into the longer WIP. If I struggle to figure out where it is going next, I’ll do some character play as see what happens.

    Just taking my first break.

    Up to 4350 WC.

I thought this was going to be really tough to get back into, but things are going rather well!

I must say, I did splurge on a new IBM keyboard a while ago, and it has made a huge difference to the comfort level – so far, no pain in the fingers.

Still, time for a nice sup of tea and a cigarette – terrible habit, I know 😉

Will update again, before I hit the sheets.

Good luck to everyone who joins while I am offline.

    Hello everyone!

I’m so, so happy to be able to participate today! 🙂
Had an early start and got most of my chores out of the way while having breakfast, plus even took a short walk this morning – the weather is gorgeous, so I knew I’d be distracted otherwise.

Now, I’m ready to being. My plan for today is to write a few articles (both for my own blog, and as guest posts), write/reply to a bunch of work-related e-mails that I have put off for too long, and write/reply to comments which, again, I’ve put off since nearly the beginning of 2014…
More like catching up with myself today, rather than too much new material, with a little photo editing thrown in there for good measure, as that always sparks my creativity and gets me into the mood to write my own stuff.

Happy writing everyone, will see you later 🙂

Finished 1,155 words of journaling in my Moon Goddess journal writing with an aquamarine gel pen. It was liberating just like I hoped it would be. I brainstormed new ways to approach the story I’m writing and it’s going to open up whole new dimensions. I’ll have to scrap what I’ve already got and start over, but that’s OK.

Also took a break for some breakfast. Brian hauled in some breakfast burritos from Mante’s Chow Cart. (I know Leigh will be jealous. :D) Next I’m going to grind some beans and make another heavenly cappuccino, and then dive into my Word document for story explorations with my new map.

I started my story over from scratch and have written 990 words of the new version, for a grand total so far of 2,145.

I can’t believe only 990. It was such a huge creative departure from what I was doing with it previously, my dizzy brain feels like I just produced 5,000 words. Ah, well. Doesn’t matter. I’m having an absolute ball with it, entertaining myself as I write.

Need to take a break to let my brain cells un-sog. I think I’ll get a little sunshine and then take a shower. Still in my Hello Kitty jammies here at 1 p.m.

I’m on 3,055. Still having fun with my story but taking some pretty long breaks today (after a week of too much burn-out from work). Going to take another break right now and make some decaf.

Welcome, MGK. Was wondering when you’d show your lovely face. 🙂 Hope your day as neighborhood helper was fulfilling. Ready to write?

Yeppers, Lady M. The mayordomo said I was “a big help.” It made me feel special in a Forrest Gumpy kind of way!

Okay, alla youse 10kers — I’m here. Better late than never!

Ditch cleaning wiped me out. Four miles round trip of walking the Acequia Madre del Rio Chiquito (the mother ditch) full of willow, wild roses, thorny plum trees and lots of creepy trash from the winter. Nine million Bud Light cans…and a weathered Spider Man stuffed doll the size of a spaniel that I thought at first was something far more lugubrious. It made me shriek. Oh yeah, and I got poked in the ear by an apricot branch. Good times!

After coming home and cleaning up, I immediately fell asleep on the couch where I commenced snoring and drooling.

But now I am up and mostly alert. My plan for the rest of the day is editing/revising the next 50 page segment of my novel. More if I can retain focus. If not, I’ll continue working on another version of my query letter.

Sending bucket-loads of encouragement and esteem to all you brave writers!

      Hi Leigh,

Glad to hear that you have recovered from your ditch cleaning. I have no idea what that is, but it sounds like hard work!

Have fun, and good luck with the writing.

      Cheers

    Okay, time to quit.

Just 5 minutes until the 24 hours are up!

    I am now on 9122.

So I didn’t quite make the 10k, but still the highest WC I have so far managed, so I am happy with that.

And I had heaps of fun doing it.

I had almost forgotten the buzz you get from watching the word count rise.

Now I will need to spend tomorrow cleaning up and editing what has been put down.

Good luck to everyone else out there, and I hope you make your targets.

As always, a huge thank you to Milli for making all this possible. None of us would be here without you.

    All the best,

    Liam

Liam, that’s all very satisfying and fun to hear about. Your biggest word count so far? 9,122 words? And you had a great time and got a word nerd buzz? I love it!!

Enjoy yourself tomorrow cleaning up your first draft. We shall look forward to having you join us again, hopefully next month if you can make it. 😀

I will certainly try to make it next month.

But I have new job starting next week, so I am not sure how much free time I will have. Let’s hope so.

As always, it has been a pleasure, and everyone makes it feel so comfortable.

Thanks to you all, and best of luck.

        Cheers

Best wishes for success in your new job, Liam. I hope your first day (and your first week, and your first month) goes smoothly and you settle in with no problems. Good luck!!

Drop in and say Hello next month even if you can’t make it for the writing.

I’m on 4,864 and about to take a break for dinner. Brian has made us burgers on the grill and I’m starving. I’ll be back after dinner.

I’ve reached 5,998 and I’m gonna call it a night. This story has been so fun to work on—the kind that writes itself while you lose yourself in the mesmerizing task of typing the words. Just what I needed today.

Leigh, you still out there? Planning to give a report? I’d be interested to hear how you did. 🙂

Having fun telling the story is what writing what the Muse whispers is all about. Glad you had a pretty productive day, sounds like a huge word count considering you were so burnt out after your week!

Thanks, Estrella. 6K *did* feel huge after the week I had. But the best thing was feeling healed by having fun with my writing. I was only going to participate for a little while (because of needing to get some rest) but the therapy felt so good I wanted to keep going. 😀

Isn’t it amazing when writing works as therapy like in your case yesterday? Love that the day worked out so well for you!

Hey Milli — 5,998 is fantastic, and just as exciting for me, you’re having fun telling the story.

Mmmmm…burgers? Could you send one my way? I’m microwaving a tortilla with cheese as I write this.

I covered about 35 pages in today’s edit/rewrite. Some chapters are more intensive in this process than others! I’m happy with it, overall.

I’ve also been working on my query letter, and feel like I’ve made a big breakthrough there. Query letters are almost more challenging than the novel.

I’m getting tired now, so I think I’ll put it away for tonight. Can’t wait to catch up with you this week!

That’s awesome, Leigh. 35 pages when rewriting is a pretty swift clip.

The breakthrough with the query letter has got me intrigued. I agree, stuff like query letters are a whole different kind of challenge, using a part of the brain that can hurt while doing it. LOL!

Now that the last report is in, sounds like a very satisfying 10K Day was had by all.

G’night, folks! See you next month.

Well yes, having had the day off (and getting a two-hour “extension” as to when I need to leave the house this evening) is really paying off so far.
It is a fun and relaxing day, and I didn’t even work myself into a stress-ball thinking how much I want to write. Inspiration just came on its own.

I have a total of 9813 words for Sat/Sun at the moment and am pretty pleased with myself.

Going to take a break now and start getting ready for an outing later.
Depending how long it takes me, I might sit back to my laptop and finish another blog post that I’m letting sit for a while 🙂

So just in case I end up reading instead, thank you for having me over these days – it was a blast and I can’t wait until next month’s 10K Days!

Estrella, so very pleased to hear you had a blast and can’t wait for next month. And 9813 words for Sat/Sun is fabulous. Your remark about not working yourself into a stress ball was adorable and gave me a big smile. I’m very, very happy to hear you had a fun and relaxing day of it. You just made my Sunday. 🙂

Enjoy your reading, and your outing.

      XOXO
