    Hi all!

I guess you could say I’m starting super, super early, but because of my crazy work schedule (I don’t actually arrive until 10) and massive homework that’s due for a college in another time zone (yay for online courses), my sleep schedule dictates that I’ll be awake for another two hours, so I figured I would get a head start on the day since I’ll be stuck at work during the daytime hours and won’t get as much done.

I’ve got the music on, the cat fed and sleeping (for now), and my brain wired. Good luck to all!

And it’s time for bed, but I got 2,563 words written so far. Hopefully this drive will stick around during my breaks at work and into the evening when I get back home!

    Good luck to everyone!

Wow Laura! You did hit a groove. Awesome! 🙂

It’s almost 6:30am a little ways down the road from Laura here in AR and nearly time to wake up the kid for school. And let the dogs out. And start the laundry.

    Ah the writer’s life. 😀

Today I’ll be working on a new short story that came to me one day last week while I was attempting to sleep. It’s called Searcher and is about a young lady somewhere in Appalachia who is the last resort to find missing people in the mountains.

For the first time, I have the story fairly well lined out in my head as well as on paper (maybe because it’s much shorter). So I have high hopes that this will be the first story I actually finish. 🙂

Well, that alarm is about to go off so I’m gonna get settled in. Good luck to all!

Hi all, I was planning on going for it today. I have been doing Milli’s “Ace your 10K day” online workshop but I haven’t quite finished it yet. I shooting for Saturday but if I get through and find sometime between other things then I’ll try to get a few words in.

    Good luck all.

    Good afternoon folks,

Really got to sort out this late start thing, especially when I’ve only got a short day today and Saturday due to work.

Working on character studies for my novel today, one of them took an interesting twist yesterday when one of my principle characters changed ethnicity on me. Weird how characters evolve eh?

Anyway, good luck to everyone, I’ve got an hour to write, and will try to check in when I finish work tonight.

      Hi Jo,

It’s true; I did think you’d be the first one posting, because of being five hours ahead. What is the patten of the late start? Procrastination? Or busy doing other things?

Your character changed ethnicity? Such a deal! Can’t wait to hear how that goes.

      xoxo

I don’t know what it is Milli. Prob doesn’t help that I’m stuck on pub shift body clock, so getting up before 10 is rare. But I have plenty of time off lately so should be tearing through this novel. It’s not happening, something’s still getting in the way. Gonna investigate my friends offer of hypotherapy next week, maybe that will get things moving.

    Good Morning, Writing Champions!

I had a ‘so-so’ night’s sleep, but I dragged my sorry butt outta bed about an hour and a half ago and wrote my Morning Pages (a la Julia Cameron from The Artist’s Way) – 600 words down.

Off to have a light breakfast and then dive into some prompted free writing before tackling some of my memoir project.

Hope the writing goes well, all!

Sorry about the so-so night’s sleep. That’s always a bummer on the eve of a 10K Day. 🙁

But awesome on the Morning Pages 600 words! 😀

C U back on the page after breakfast.

Grrr. I hate it when I’m in a flow but then I get so hungry I have to go for my breakfast break sooner than I want to.

1,175 of journaling so far but still plenty more things I’m eager to write in that doc. Off to make some sunny-side-up eggs and toaster waffles.

I agree Valeka. I’ve only written 687 words so far today but they are carrying my story forward. And, I’m enjoying writing. That’s what counts, right? 🙂

In my story, my heroine is about to realize she’s on the right track to finding a missing person while he is on his fourth day of being injured and stuck down a mine shaft, getting ever closer to death…

You know it’s going to be a good day at work when you get to throw a printer out a window. Apparently I threw my concentration out with it because my drive sputtered out when I saw down to write in between projects. I added on another 700 words to top out right over 3,200 so far. Hopefully I’ll be able to get my groove back.

If I can get the right (I originally typed write, good grief) music going, I can really get in stride. Anyone else listen to music while they type away?

I’m late in getting here, but I’ve finally made it. That’s what’s important, right? My plan for today is just to work on some fiction. I’m winging it. I don’t have anything in particular I want to work on, so I’ll go through and see what I’ve got started and take it from there. I don’t have a word count goal. Just want to write.

But I need to get something to eat first, then I’ll kick word booty. 😉

Laura: Sometimes I listen to music when I write, but not as much as I used to. The music usually reflects what I’m writing, i.e. if I’m writing a western, I’ll have country music and/or American Indian music on. If I’m writing action/adventure, it’s rock and roll all the way. 🙂

Went on a break where I drank some water, took a quick shower and then put down a towel in the backyard to lie on (so I could pretend I was on a beach getting a suntan).

Was lying there letting my mind drift when suddenly one of the things from my list today starting writing itself! Had to run back inside and start typing. It came out in one big long flow (1070 words) and it was over before I knew what hit me. Wow. The power of a little daydreaming, methinks.

It sure took me by surprise! I was not even planning to work on that item from my list until much later today.

Strange, too, because as I went on my break I was thinking: “I wish I was better at daydreaming. Instead of being so good at worrying, etc.” Seems I got my wish instantaneously!

Hmm. Maybe I need to come up with a list of wishes…..

Good approach! I sometimes make lists of things that I would like to write about and revisit it sometimes. That’s where my short story is coming from – a list of ideas I started about five years ago.

I’m a bit of a worrywart. I love writing outdoors. It gets my focus on more relaxing things and that always opens my brain 🙂

How cool (or hot hot hot!) is that, Milli? I’m going by your excellent example and taking a more laid back approach to the day. Lo and behold, more writing flows easily. Makes me think of zee song:
What a day for a daydream
What a day for a daydreamin’ boy (or woman lol)
And I’m lost in a daydream
Dreamin ‘bout my bundle of joy…

I’m on 5512 and it’s been flowing out of me like a river. Even though that feels good, I’m going to stop for a longer break. Next session I’ll be starting on the hardest thing from my list – much more left-brained than my writing so far today. Gonna give my brain cells some extra nourishment (some yummy reading) and maybe make another cappuccino before I come back.

Just checking in before I go take a shower to wake myself up!

    I’m currently at 2,458 words.

I opened up one of my character files and decided to write a possible version of his background, since I haven’t really had much of a chance to think about it. He’s a star high school football quarterback who loves the game more than anything–even more than girls. Along comes a real knockout of a girl, and she finds him attractive and interesting–and she loves the game!

I’m not sure where this is going yet, but that’s part of the fun with some of my stories–discovering it as I go. I know there will be some kind of danger, and a death. Otherwise, I’m not sure how this will turn out. My characters are speaking to me as I write, telling me how things happened. I’m just along for the ride. 🙂

Lois, that sounds like fun! Also quite a bit different from the kinds of characters you normally write about? I don’t usually imagine you writing about football players. LOL! But it’s so liberating to write about anything you want to. (Or, should I say, anything those characters wanna make you write. ;))

      • Lois
        April 25, 2012 | 4:45 PM

It is fun, Milli! 😀 But he won’t always be a football player. That chapter in his life will close by the end of this, even though right now, he wants it more than anything.

And you’re right. I don’t normally write about football players. My thing is futbol (soccer)! 😀

Just checking in for the afternoon. I’m right at 4,400 words, which is pretty good considering what a crazy day we’ve had at work and the fact that I had a mini-freak out when I discovered I’m about seven scenes away from actually finishing my book. Once I got it all outlined out, I was more than ready to write, but I needed lunch and had multiple issues that had to be dealt with.

Now that most everyone is gone for the day, I’ve found the most perfect music possible for what I’m writing, and I’ve plowed through my data sheets and am actually ahead, I plan on using the last two and a half hours of work to focus more on the writing in between data sheets instead of playing games on my iPhone to give my brain a break.

How incredibly exciting to be only seven scenes away from finishing your book. And how wonderful that you can write at work in between data sheets. And that most everyone has gone home. Sounds poifeck!

Best of luck with that outline. Will be looking forward to your further updates.

Thanks! I almost always write at work, but it’s normally just to 100 word sprints every two hours, just to keep brain sharp and to get away from the monotony. It’s been different writing in every spare moment I have!

I can already tell a difference between today and other solo 10K days I’ve done. The words are coming easier and it’s awesome seeing everyone else’s writing counts. I might have to do this a lot more often!

SO PLEASED to be done! I feel a sense of accomplishment for finishing.

This means I can hide away in my office for most of the day and focus on making sure instant in track for my work this week. I don’t have to be there for another hour, so that’s nice.

I added a scene last night so that the transition between two chapters didn’t feel so rocky, so I have four scenes left, including the one I started last night that I’m thinking is going to be double the length I thought it would be.

Coming right behind you, Laura, with 10,104 words. It’s actually 12:55 here in Ohio and hubby say that’s cheating. I told him it’s *my* 10K day. 😉

    Hello all!

Here I am for another 10K day, although I don’t know if I’ll hit 10K because of the weather (if it’s beautiful, I’ll be outside on the deck–if it’s bad, I’ll be outside chasing), family supposedly visiting, and the fact that I might, just might, finish my book before 10K is done.

Oh here I go. I’m having another “I’m writing a book” moment. I really have to stop having these. People look at me like I’m insane, even though the only person in my room at the moment is my cat.

Writing some words for the next few hours before heading to bed. Sleeping in tomorrow, so I need the biggest head start I can muster!

Good luck to everyone and happy weekend!

    -Laura

    Hey all!
It’s 11:18 here and I’m just starting my 10K Day now.

The weather is gorgeous, so I might give writing in the yard a try during my first break (it’d take too long now and in case the laptop screen won’t be visible outside it would just be lost writing time.) If it works out, the next update will be from there 🙂

    Happy writing everyone!

Not a completely good start as I slept in (woke up in the middle of the night and couldn’t fall back asleep for hours), but I’m now at 656 words and half way through a travel article. The hard part is over now as I had some thoughts to translate – that’s what kept me from working on this article sooner.
I can’t wait to add the pictures during one of my breaks later on. Or better yet, tomorrow.

        Estrella,

I know how you feel. I didn’t have a good night last night either. 🙁 But at least I slept well the night before the Wed 10K.

That’s marvelous about being outside writing in the garden bench swing. I’m jealous! Here it’s a rainy, gloomy day. (By the way, I’ll want to see a pic of that garden bench swing. With you writing in it would be the most fun.)

Thrilled to hear you got to break through that translation block for your travel article!

        xoxo

I just moved into the kitchen with all my stuff, it’s too sunny by now and I was starting to boil (plus my pants are black) 😉

I’m taking a break for lunch and get back a bit later.

Hi all, it’s 7:00am here. Late start for me but have all my chores done. Down to business.

Good luck Estrella and everyone else. She and I have taken the Ace Your 10K Day course and so this is the first 10K day for us after finishing the course. Let’s see how it goes.

Still waking up after not the best night’s sleep. I’ve got my cappuccino in hand – made by my coffee slave and now he’s sulking bcuz he has to drink his alone. (Those darn online writers are always hogging his Milli. ;))

Gonna start with some journaling until I get my brain in gear. And then I’ve got an assignment feedback to write for a student in the Fear of Writing Online Course.

Whew, first little break. I’m only at 1512 or so, not sure exactly as I have been writing on my horse blog and a tiny in the course coffee shop. But trying to be conservative on the count.

Wish I had a coffee salve as I am low. Just a quick mind rest and back to my horse story I started.

I have a candle burning for the spirit of Mikey Dog and one for Pat his brother.

Haha! You wrote coffee salve! Perfect! Maybe we should develop a coffee salve to smear on our skin whenever we can’t get the beverage. It should go straight to our bloodstream that way. 😀

Congrats on the 1,512 words. No need to be conservative. The only thing you can’t really count is emails and your check-ins here. Everything else is fair game.

P.S. Don’t forget to use the News Forum for your 10K news. I’ll move your post over from the coffeehouse for you so you can join Estrella in the newsroom. 🙂

Salve!! Ha, I’m trying really hard to write and not want to correct my spelling! When I see it written incorrectly I just can’t help myself I have to correct it. Trying not to worry so much. I’ll take my coffee in liquid form, it taste too good and I’d much rather have a coffee Slave.

My mate is up so I’ll have a nice breakfast and back in a few.

1,401 of journaling and the brain is starting to feel a teeny bit warmed up.

Got the student feedback finished. Must desperately get more coffee now (those darn cappuccinos I insist on drinking are lots of prep – but so worth it).

After that I’ll have to eyeball my list to see what I can deal with next. Forcing myself to work on a blog post looks like my only option, whichever way I squint at the page. Not really in the mood for blogging, but I guess I’ll just hafta be.
